ST. LOUIS - Paul Kariya scored in his first game action in almost a year to help the St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night over the Minnesota Wild in the pre-season opener for both teams.

Erik Johnson also returned for St. Louis, which got goals from Kariya and Chris Porter 29 seconds apart in the first period.

Derek Armstrong had a goal and an assist. Benoit Pouliot scored with under a minute to play for the Wild.

Kariya, who missed all but 11 games a season ago after having surgery on both hips, played for the first time since Nov. 5, 2008. Johnson, the No. 1 pick of 2006, also saw his first action for the Blues since missing all of last season with a knee injury.

Unlike the Blues, Minnesota brought mostly minor league players.

Kariya got the Blues on the board 4:25 into the opening period, beating Wild goalie Anton Khudobin using defenceman Jamie Fraser as a screen. Porter scored 29 seconds later off an assist from Armstrong, who is in camp with the Blues on a pro tryout.

Chris Mason stopped all 10 shots he faced for the Blues before being replaced by St. Louis native Ben Bishop midway through the second period.
